11 optical illusions that will play tricks on your eyes — and what they say about how you see the world

  • A contributor on the storytelling platform Playbuzz put together a quiz about optical illusions.
  • Each photo contains two possible images — one „big picture“ and one that is less obvious to spot.
  • Depending on which you see first, you might have „initial perception“ or „deep perception.“

Images that appear to show two things at once are a classic genre of optical illusions. The brain’s figure-ground organization decides what part of an image is the main figure and what part is the background, but optical illusions like Rubin’s vase can make it hard to tell. Do you see two people facing each other, or a vase?

A Playbuzz contributor named Samantha Jones created a quiz full of optical illusions that test this function of the brain. Do you perceive the „big picture“ image first, or does your vision gravitate towards the less noticeable detail?

For example, one photo in the quiz shows a crowd of zebras standing in grass at first glance. But that grass also takes the shape of a lion’s mane, and the pattern of the zebras‘ stripes form the background lion’s face.

Based on your results, you might have „initial perception“ where you see the more prominent image first, or „deep perception,“ where your brain zooms straight in on the more hidden image.

Take the quiz below and find out what your perception says about you.
